چکیده

We study a solute concentrating mechanism that can be represented by coupled transport equations with specific boundary conditions. Our motivation for considering this system is urine concentrating mechanism in nephrons. The model consists in 3 tubes arranged in a countercurrent manner. Our equations describe a countercurrent exchanger, with a parameter V which quantifies the active transport. In order to understand the role of active transport in the mechanism, we consider the limit V −→ ∞. We prove that when V goes to infinity, the system converges to a profile which stays uniformly bounded in V and which presents a boundary layer at the border of the domain. The effect is that the solute is concentrated at a specific point in the tubes. When considering urine concentration, this is physilogically optimal because the composition of final urine is determined at this point. Asymptotic Analysis of Binary Gas Mixture Separation by Nanometric Tubular Ceramic Membranes: Cocurrent and Countercurrent Flow Patterns

Analytical gas-permeation models for predicting the separation process across  membranes (exit compositions and area requirement) constitutes an important and necessary step in understanding the overall performance of  membrane modules. But, the exact (numerical) solution methods suffer from the complexity of the solution. Therefore, solutions of nonlinear ordinary differential equations th...

Experimental and Mathematical Investigation of Time-Dependence of Contaminant Dispersivity in Soil

Laboratory and field experiments have shown that dispersivity is one of the key parameters in contaminant transport in porous media and varies with elapsed time. This time-dependence can be shown using a time-variable dispersivity function. The advantage of this function as opposed to constant dispersivity is that it has at least two coefficients that increase the accuracy of the dispersivity p...

Renal concentrating mechanisms in newborn infants. Effect of dietary protein and water content, role of urea, and responsiveness to antidiuretic hormone.

Measurements of the concentration of osmotically active solutes in the urine of dehydrated infants have demonstrated a gradual increase from birth through the first weeks of life, with adult levels being attained only after several months (1-13). The minimal response noted in infants to administration of vasopressin has led many observers (2, 5, 8, 11, 12) to the conclusion that due to immaturi...

Mathematical simulation of a vehicle radiator by genetic algorithm method and comparison with experimental data

In many industrial processes, heat exchangers play the important role of the cooling function. The effective heat transfer rate in a specific process strongly depends on the heat exchanger design. The most popular type of heat exchangers commonly used in the automotive industry, is called "radiator". In engines, radiators play the important role of the cooling process. The present study is de...

Current Models for Predicting Drug-induced Cholestasis: The Role of Hepatobiliary Transport System

Drug-induced cholestasis is the main type of liver disorder accompanied by high morbidity and mortality. Evidence for the role of hepatobiliary pumps in the cholestasis patho-mechanism is constantly increasing. Recognition of the interactions of chemical agents with these transporters at the initial phases of drug discovery can help develop new drug candidates with low cholestasis potential. Th...
